What Is The First Step In The Remodeling Process?
The first step would be having an idea of what your needs are such as; more space, improve functionality, more light or even just an updated look.
The second most important item would be have a budgeted price in mind that would include labor and products you want included. In some cases you may not have a budget or have no idea of what your project would cost. On our first meeting, we concentrate on establishing a budgetary number based on your project wish list. This budgetary number or ball park cost as we refer to, would normally be established before a design would be started.
Think of this part of the process like going to a car dealer for a car. The sales person's first questions would be what kind of car, with what options, and what was your budget. Remodeling projects are no different.
With those essential items in mind, we would set up a meeting to discuss your project, determine what your goals are and how we will help you achieve those goals and meet your expectations. Sounds simple, it is. Our step by step process keeps you informed and in charge during the whole process.

As of June of 2009, Wooden Thumb Inc. has converted completely to a virtual showroom. Due to the ever continuous changes in technology and our clients busy schedules, making the time to visit a showroom has become more of a challenge. The internet has become the most valuable immediate 24/7 showroom and information resource.
Wooden Thumb Inc. Designers now bring the showroom to you. The touch and feel of products has not gone away. We want to make the remodeling experience with us an awesome one, starting with the personalized service, of bringing items such as cabinetry and countertop samples right to your door. We also bring the visual experience of your remodeling projects to you, with virtual tours via our computers in the comfort of your own home. Everyone's time is valuable and if you value that time as much as we do, let us save you the chasing. Does Wooden Thumb give FREE Estimates?
FREE ESTIMATES - Wouldn't that be Nice... Sorry we are professionals and would hope that by contacting us for an estimate, you understand that, and value the knowledge we have. With that in mind we normally charge a nominal site fee (usually between $25 and $50) depending on the round trip distance from the Milwaukee Area. What you will receive from our site visit is approximately 1 hour of consultation to determine your work scope versus budget.
Wooden Thumb will gladly provide verbal "BUDGETARY / BALLPARK" estimates for normal projects such as basic kitchen and bath remodels, lower levels, attic conversions and additions. This verbal budgetary estimate may be provided without all of the actual construction drawings. This initial discussion would be a starting point to position a clients view on weather the project is attainable, or if adjustments in work scope must be decided upon early in this planning stage.
"Firm price" estimates for extensive projects can be provided if the "design" has been contracted to Wooden Thumb at an hourly rate or standard firm price rate.
All designs of Wooden Thumb Inc. staff are proprietary to Wooden Thumb Inc.. What this means to you is, all design reviews are completed on our system between the client and the designer until the client has accepted the design. All design time is billed at an hourly rate of $75.00 per hour. In the event Wooden Thumb is contracted to complete the project 50% of the design fee is applied to the base contract price. At no time will Wooden Thumb Inc. designs and/or drawings be released to the client contracting the design, unless a contract for completing the remodeling project has been consummated. Once a contract has been signed and down payment received, drawings of the design in mention will be included as part of the contract documents. Wooden Thumb Inc. "Normally" will not design a project unless the client has a meaningful desire to have us complete the major portions of work along with supplying the cabinetry and countertops, up to and including completing the total project.
We can usually schedule a site visit within a week to provide a verbal or budgetary/ballpark estimate.
With the employees we have on staff and our loyal
subcontractors, we can handle the smallest type projects
such as an exterior door replacement up to and including

Do not be afraid or embarrassed to ask for help if you get into a project and run into problems that you cannot handle. After all, if everyone knew everything about remodeling we would never meet.
If you plan to do the project yourself, be honest with the contractors you have for the estimates. Explain to them that you need advice. If you try to "pick their brain" to get enough information to do the work yourself, you run the risk of missing something important.
Inform the contractor that you are interested in doing the project yourself. Generally, contractors charge a consulting fee, however you will benefit from the time spent and questions asked.
As a design/build firm we design cabinetry and countertops as well as full homes and additions only with the intent of the client purchasing these products or the full service from us.
As a Do-It-Yourselfer, you must understand that the low costs to you, for our designs, take into account that client will be purchasing the designed product/s from us. This is in balance for our effort, experience and lower design cost to provide a full service. We are not a design (alone) service firm.
On the other hand Architects cost more, but that is because their product is their drawings - they intend to complete your design and then give you the drawings, to do with as you please. They don't rely on additional product sales to account for their time, it's built into their fee.
